“Leadership” is something that we constantly talk about; moreover, there are a lot of interesting theories and step-by-step guides to help you become a great leader. But the most important query is to find out what kind of leader you want to become, have you ever thought about it?

After much reflection I have come to the conclusion that some of the characteristics that are constantly repeated in great leaders are: authenticity, openness, sincerity and flexibility. Further, leaders are people who make conscious decisions, and why not? … Engage their intuition.

Leaders have a broad knowledge of their own person (limitations, areas of opportunity, skills, fears, etc.) and this is extremely important to project confidence and honesty, basic characteristics of a leader. In other words, Goethe said: “Before you do something, you must be something “and to get to that, we must have self-knowledge.

Over time, styles of leadership have mutated significantly due to changes in the way we do business. No matter if you work in the public or private sector, leadership is a necessity for handling teams and managing others’ proper performance within an organization.

Being a good leader is not easy, and watch out, there are no magic formulas. However, there are some recommendations that may help you become a much more effective one:

  • Have clear objectives: The team should know where you are going and what the goals are. With this in mind, you can plan for success.
  • Good communication: It’s not just what we say but how we say it. Active listening is an essential part of good communication, as philosopher Zenon said: We have one mouth and two ears for a reason, you have to listen more than you talk.
  • Encourage your team to be better: There is no better thing than leading with example. Moreover, the most valuable thing you can do for people is teaching them what you know.
  • Motivation: We must recognize the contributions of people and celebrate their successes; every little bit counts.

Last but not least, remember that leadership is an attitude, do not wait for someone to put you to the “title”, nobody can, you have to earn it.
