The seagulls flight

For years, I’ve seen in a lot of social groups, whether they are job teams, associations, sports teams, etc., a curious phenomenon I have called ‘the seagulls flight’. This is a social process where high performance teams lie their effectiveness and long term success. Almost as a rule in these groups, which has nothing to do with its size, there is a member of the team who stands on all members.

This aspiring leader must meet certain characteristics that equip himself to be a competitive character. However it is not required to be the strongest or the most intrepid, not the most agile or smarter, much less the most experienced, the toughest, the highest or the boldest. The only major requirement is to be able to get himself to the limit in order to serve others. He is a person who, by his example, encourages others to move forward, he does everything that is morally right. Therein lies his strength.

There is no clearer example of this phenomenon than a flock of seagulls. While spending a few pleasant moments of reflection on the edge of the pool, I saw a long line of seagulls that sailed side by side the horizon. At the beginning, I just found something curious in their formation, a kind of ‘V’. Then curiosity kept my attention until I notice something much more curious. The seagull that was leading the formation gradually went delayed, until it take part of the right row, almost to the end. One of the first seagulls took the lead of the group and placed itself as the new leader.

The leader’s job seems simple many times, however it requires great determination and great strength. Seagulls that take the role of leaders of the flock are exposed to a great effort because they set the course, receive the first impact of the air and help others to follow their path. After a while, the leading seagull is tired and it is replaced by one of the seagulls that has the determination to take its place.

Its mission has been accomplished, the leading seagull has allowed the group to continue till the destination.
